It’s All About Process

Effectively streamlining material handling.
By: Mark Heinlein | August 7, 2014

When Turf Reclamation Solutions designed our field removal equipment, we considered the entire reclamation process: from over the road equipment transport and site access, to footprint weight on the field/track, to operating speed, efficiency and flexibility, and finally to disposition of the reclaimed materials.

The average field contains 80,000 square feet of carpet and 400,000 pounds of infill. This year, about 400 fields will be removed in the US, but in a few short years that number will exceed 1,000 annually. Put three zeros behind each of those quantities above and you begin to understand the staggering amount of reclaimed field material that must be handled. Long-term success demands that every step of the process focus on efficiency and sustainability.

Consider this…eighty million square feet of turf carpet.  How will the industry responsibly manage 80,000,000sq ft of essentially “dead” carpet every single year? Right now, landfilling is the default answer for most contractors. Sustainable? Hardly. Repurposing provides limited temporary outlets but that strategy just kicks the disposal can down the road. The reality is that field reclamation activities will simply produce too much material to throw away or re-use.  We must find viable, economical ways to downcycle/recycle these field components.

Carpet recycling is not an easy thing to do because the product is a mixed bag of polymers, primarily polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyurethane (PU) – sometimes with a little polyester and nylon thrown in. But innovative companies, like TriPolymer Recycling, in Dalton GA and Re-match ApS in Denmark are tackling the challenge head-on. These companies, in alliance with TRS, are offering sustainable carpet recycling solutions today.

Their success, like ours, depends on having processes in place that streamline material handling. When a recycler receives a truckload of carpet crammed into the back of a box truck, efficiency is lost and costs rise. TRS’s cut and roll process produces uniformly sized rolls that arrive at the recyclers ideally configured for their production line. This seamless process of rolling, transporting, unloading and recycling is just one of the reasons TriPolymer and Re-match have chosen to partner with TRS.
